How it begins
Almost everything in a living body is built from four kinds of molecule: carbohydrates, proteins, lipids and nucleic acids. Each is a chain built from small repeating units, which is why a small number of building blocks can produce enormous variety. Water is not one of the four, but it makes up about 70% of a cell and every reaction happens dissolved in it.
