What this lesson covers

Chemistry of the Environment is a 8-part O Level Chemistry lesson. Each part makes one point and then hands over to the next, so it can be read in a sitting or picked up again at the part you stopped on. It defines the idea in plain words before using it, works through an example step by step, breaks the topic into its parts and compares them, shows where it is used outside the textbook, names the mistakes that cost marks in an exam, ends with a recap of what to remember.

How it begins

Clean dry air is about 78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen, 0.04% carbon dioxide, and the rest mostly argon. Water vapour varies. Test for water: anhydrous copper(II) sulfate turns from white to blue, or blue cobalt chloride paper turns pink, both show water is present, not that it is pure. Test for purity: boils at exactly 100 °C.

The 8 parts

  1. Air and water
  2. Pollutants: source, harm, remedy
  3. Greenhouse effect and climate change
  4. The Haber process, and why every condition is a compromise
  5. The Contact process and sulfuric acid
  6. Where marks go
  7. What to remember
  8. Watch one worked through
