What this lesson covers

Databases is a 6-part O Level Computer Science lesson. Each part makes one point and then hands over to the next, so it can be read in a sitting or picked up again at the part you stopped on. It defines the idea in plain words before using it, works through an example step by step, breaks the topic into its parts and compares them, names the mistakes that cost marks in an exam, ends with a recap of what to remember.

How it begins

A field is a single item of data (Surname). A record is a complete set of fields about one item or person (all the details of one student). A table is a collection of records with the same structure. A database is one or more tables. A primary key is a field that uniquely identifies each record. StudentID, ISBN, MemberNumber. A surname is unsuitable because two people may share one.

The 6 parts

  1. The structure, from field to database
  2. Flat file versus relational
  3. SQL: the clauses, in order
  4. Where marks go
  5. What to remember
  6. Watch one worked through
