What this lesson covers

MS Word Basics is a 9-part Class 5 Computer Science lesson. Each part makes one point and then hands over to the next, so it can be read in a sitting or picked up again at the part you stopped on. It defines the idea in plain words before using it, works through an example step by step, breaks the topic into its parts and compares them, shows where it is used outside the textbook, names the mistakes that cost marks in an exam, ends with a recap of what to remember.

How it begins

A word processor is software for creating documents made mainly of text. Its real advantage over paper is that everything is changeable. You can rewrite a sentence in the middle, move a paragraph, fix a spelling, without starting again. That single fact changed how people write: you can now draft badly and improve it, instead of having to get it right first time.

The 9 parts

  1. What a word processor does
  2. The tools you actually need
  3. Shortcuts worth learning now
  4. Making a document readable
  5. Saving properly
  6. Documents you will make
  7. Where it usually goes wrong
  8. What to remember
  9. Watch one worked through
