Watch one worked through

Here is one done slowly, with the reason for every move. Then one for you.

Let me show you

In "The quick cat ran silently", which word is the adjective and which is the adverb?

  1. cat = noun ran = verb
Find the noun and the verb first.
Adjectives describe nouns, adverbs describe verbs. Find those two and the rest follows.
  2. quick โ†’ cat = adjective
"Quick" tells you about the cat, a noun. So it is an adjective.
Ask "what kind of cat?" If the word answers it, it is an adjective.
  3. silently โ†’ ran = adverb
"Silently" tells you how it ran, a verb. So it is an adverb.
Ask "how did it run?" Many adverbs end in ly, but not all, so use the question not the ending.

Answer: quick is the adjective, silently is the adverb

Now you try
