Comprehension & Inference
Reading closely enough to answer what is written, and what is only implied.
What this lesson covers
Comprehension & Inference is a 9-part Class 5 English lesson. Each part makes one point and then hands over to the next, so it can be read in a sitting or picked up again at the part you stopped on. It defines the idea in plain words before using it, works through an example step by step, breaks the topic into its parts and compares them, shows where it is used outside the textbook, names the mistakes that cost marks in an exam, ends with a recap of what to remember.
How it begins
Comprehension questions get harder in a predictable order. Literal: the answer is in the text. Find it. Inference: the answer is implied. Work it out from clues. Evaluation: your opinion, supported by the text. "Do you think she was right?" Knowing which level a question is at tells you what kind of answer will earn the mark.
The 9 parts
- Three levels of reading
- What the question word is asking
- How writers imply things
- Answering at each level
- A method for longer passages
- Where this skill really matters
- Where it usually goes wrong
- What to remember
- Watch one worked through
