What this lesson covers

Descriptive Writing is a 8-part O Level English lesson. Each part makes one point and then hands over to the next, so it can be read in a sitting or picked up again at the part you stopped on. It defines the idea in plain words before using it, works through an example step by step, breaks the topic into its parts and compares them, shows where it is used outside the textbook, names the mistakes that cost marks in an exam, ends with a recap of what to remember.

How it begins

A descriptive composition has almost no plot. Nothing needs to happen. What is being marked is whether you can make a reader see, hear and feel a place, and whether you can organise that impression rather than pile it up. The instinct most students bring is to reach for adjectives: the beautiful, golden, shimmering, magnificent sunset. Four adjectives in a row cancel each other out and describe nothing.

The 8 parts

  1. Description is not decoration
  2. The five senses, weighted properly
  3. Worked: general to specific
  4. Structure: description needs a route
  5. Sentence variety is a marked skill
  6. Where marks go
  7. What to remember
  8. Watch one worked through
