Watch one worked through

Here is one done slowly, with the reason for every move. Then one for you.

Let me show you

Replace the repeated noun: "Sara lost Sara's book, so Sara looked for Sara's book."

  1. Sara ... Sara's ... Sara ... Sara's
Find the noun that keeps coming back. Sara, four times.
Repeating a name over and over makes writing sound clumsy. Spotting the repeat is the first job.
  2. Sara lost ...
Keep the first Sara so the reader knows who it is.
Always name the person once before you swap in a pronoun, or nobody knows who "she" is.
  3. Sara lost her book, so she looked for it.
Swap the rest: "Sara lost her book, so she looked for it."
Her, she and it are pronouns. Each one stands in for a noun already mentioned.

Answer: Sara lost her book, so she looked for it.

Now you try

Which word is a pronoun: "He ate the mango."

he
