Watch one worked through

Here is one done slowly, with the reason for every move. Then one for you.

Let me show you

Which word rhymes with "hat": "hop", "cat" or "hand"?

  1. h-at
Say "hat" out loud and listen to the end: /at/.
Rhyme is about the end of the word, not the start. Listen to the ending first.
  2. h-op c-at h-and
Now say each one: hop ends /op/, cat ends /at/, hand ends /and/.
Say them aloud. Words that look similar do not always sound similar.
  3. h-at = c-at โœ“
"cat" ends with the same sound as "hat", so cat rhymes.
Hop and hand start with the same letter as hat, which is the trap. Starting the same is not rhyming.

Answer: cat
