Basic Statistics & Probability
Summarising data, reading it honestly, and calculating combined probabilities.
What this lesson covers
Basic Statistics & Probability is a 11-part Class 10 Mathematics lesson. Each part makes one point and then hands over to the next, so it can be read in a sitting or picked up again at the part you stopped on. It defines the idea in plain words before using it, works through an example step by step, breaks the topic into its parts and compares them, shows where it is used outside the textbook, names the mistakes that cost marks in an exam, ends with a recap of what to remember.
How it begins
Centre: Mean, total ÷ number of values. Uses every value; distorted by extremes. Median: the middle value in order. Resistant to extremes. Mode: most frequent. The only one usable for non-numerical data. Spread: Range, largest minus smallest. Simple, but a single outlier ruins it. Interquartile range: Q3 − Q1, the middle 50%. Far more reliable. A summary needs both a centre and a spread. Either alone is misleading.
The 11 parts
- Measures of centre and spread
- Mean from a frequency table
- Quartiles and cumulative frequency
- When the mean misleads
- Probability rules
- With and without replacement
- A "at least one" problem
- Statistics in the real world
- Where marks are lost
- What to remember
- Watch one worked through
