What this lesson covers

Coordinate Geometry is a 7-part O Level Mathematics lesson. Each part makes one point and then hands over to the next, so it can be read in a sitting or picked up again at the part you stopped on. It defines the idea in plain words before using it, works through an example step by step, breaks the topic into its parts and compares them, names the mistakes that cost marks in an exam, ends with a recap of what to remember.

How it begins

Coordinate geometry on this syllabus is built from four calculations, and every exam question is some combination of them: Gradient between two points: (y₂ − y₁)/(x₂ − x₁). Rise over run. Midpoint: average the x's, average the y's. Length: Pythagoras on the differences, √[(x₂ − x₁)² + (y₂ − y₁)²]. Equation of a line: y = mx + c, with m the gradient and c where it crosses the y-axis.

The 7 parts

  1. Four tools
  2. Gradient is a ratio, not a number to look up
  3. Finding the equation of a line
  4. Where lines meet, and what shape points make
  5. Where marks go
  6. What to remember
  7. Watch one worked through
