What this lesson covers

Geometry: Congruence & Symmetry is a 10-part Class 7 Mathematics lesson. Each part makes one point and then hands over to the next, so it can be read in a sitting or picked up again at the part you stopped on. It defines the idea in plain words before using it, works through an example step by step, breaks the topic into its parts and compares them, shows where it is used outside the textbook, names the mistakes that cost marks in an exam, ends with a recap of what to remember.

How it begins

Congruent, exactly the same shape and size. One could be placed perfectly on top of the other, after turning or flipping. Similar, the same shape but a different size. All angles equal, all sides in the same ratio. Every congruent pair is also similar (with a scale factor of 1), but not the other way round. A photograph and its enlargement are similar. Two copies of the same photograph are congruent.

The 10 parts

  1. Congruent and similar
  2. Proving triangles congruent
  3. Lines of symmetry
  4. Rotational symmetry
  5. Using similarity to measure the unreachable
  6. Transformations
  7. Where this is used
  8. Where it usually goes wrong
  9. What to remember
  10. Watch one worked through
