What this lesson covers

Speed, Distance & Time is a 9-part Class 7 Mathematics lesson. Each part makes one point and then hands over to the next, so it can be read in a sitting or picked up again at the part you stopped on. It defines the idea in plain words before using it, works through an example step by step, breaks the topic into its parts and compares them, shows where it is used outside the textbook, names the mistakes that cost marks in an exam, ends with a recap of what to remember.

How it begins

A rate compares two quantities with different units. Speed compares distance with time: how far, per unit of time. The unit tells you the formula. "km/h" is read kilometres per hour, and "per" means divide. So speed = distance ÷ time, and the other two rearrangements come straight out of it: distance = speed × time time = distance ÷ speed Average speed is total distance ÷ total time.

The 9 parts

  1. Speed is a rate

  3. Units are where it goes wrong
  4. The average speed trap
  5. Reading a distance-time graph
  6. Trains, bridges and two cars
  7. Where marks get lost
  8. What to remember
