Statistics
Averages from lists, tables and groups; cumulative frequency and quartiles; histograms with unequal widths.
What this lesson covers
Statistics is a 8-part O Level Mathematics lesson. Each part makes one point and then hands over to the next, so it can be read in a sitting or picked up again at the part you stopped on. It defines the idea in plain words before using it, works through an example step by step, breaks the topic into its parts and compares them, shows where it is used outside the textbook, names the mistakes that cost marks in an exam, ends with a recap of what to remember.
How it begins
The mean uses every value: add them, divide by how many. The median is the middle value once they are in order, for an even count, the average of the middle two. The mode is the most frequent. Which one the exam wants is sometimes the question. The mean is pulled by extreme values: one billionaire in a room makes the mean income meaningless, but the median barely moves.
