Vectors & Transformations
Column vectors, vector geometry and the four transformations, including how to describe one fully.
What this lesson covers
Vectors & Transformations is a 7-part O Level Mathematics lesson. Each part makes one point and then hands over to the next, so it can be read in a sitting or picked up again at the part you stopped on. It defines the idea in plain words before using it, works through an example step by step, breaks the topic into its parts and compares them, names the mistakes that cost marks in an exam, ends with a recap of what to remember.
How it begins
A vector has magnitude and direction but no fixed position. The column vector (3, 2) means "3 right, 2 up" wherever you start. Two arrows on a page with the same length and direction are the same vector. Adding vectors is doing one journey then the next, nose to tail. Subtracting is adding the reverse: b − a is "back along a, then along b".
The 7 parts
- A vector is a journey
- Vector geometry: express, then compare
- The four transformations, and what "describe fully" means
- Combining transformations
- Where marks go
- What to remember
- Watch one worked through
