Simple Harmonic Motion & Waves
The maths of anything that repeats, a pendulum, a guitar string, a radio signal.
What this lesson covers
Simple Harmonic Motion & Waves is a 8-part Class 10 Physics lesson. Each part makes one point and then hands over to the next, so it can be read in a sitting or picked up again at the part you stopped on. It defines the idea in plain words before using it, works through an example step by step, breaks the topic into its parts and compares them, shows where it is used outside the textbook, names the mistakes that cost marks in an exam, ends with a recap of what to remember.
How it begins
Simple harmonic motion is any back-and-forth motion where the restoring force is proportional to the displacement and always points back to the centre. F ∝ −x (the minus sign means "towards the centre")A pendulum, a mass on a spring and a vibrating guitar string all qualify. The key vocabulary: Amplitude, maximum displacement from the centre. Time period (T): time for one complete oscillation, in seconds.
