What this lesson covers

Space Physics is a 8-part O Level Physics lesson. Each part makes one point and then hands over to the next, so it can be read in a sitting or picked up again at the part you stopped on. It defines the idea in plain words before using it, works through an example step by step, breaks the topic into its parts and compares them, shows where it is used outside the textbook, names the mistakes that cost marks in an exam, ends with a recap of what to remember.

How it begins

Earth rotates on its axis once in 24 hours, day and night. It orbits the Sun once in about 365 days. Its axis is tilted at about 23°, so for half the year one hemisphere leans towards the Sun: longer days, higher Sun, more concentrated energy, summer. Not "closer to the Sun"; Earth is in fact nearest in January. The Moon orbits Earth in about a month.

The 8 parts

  1. The Earth, the Moon and the Sun
  2. Gravity and orbits
  3. Stars: how the Sun works and how it will end
  4. Distances in space, and light-years
  5. Redshift, Hubble, and the Big Bang
  6. Where marks go
  7. What to remember
  8. Watch one worked through
