What this lesson covers

Chemical Effects of Electric Current is a 10-part Class 8 Science lesson. Each part makes one point and then hands over to the next, so it can be read in a sitting or picked up again at the part you stopped on. It defines the idea in plain words before using it, works through an example step by step, breaks the topic into its parts and compares them, shows where it is used outside the textbook, names the mistakes that cost marks in an exam, ends with a recap of what to remember.

How it begins

Not all liquids conduct electricity, and the reason is what makes this topic work. Conduct: salt water, acids, alkalis, lemon juice. These contain ions, charged particles free to move. Do not conduct: pure distilled water, sugar solution, oil, alcohol. No free ions. Pure water is actually a poor conductor.

The 10 parts

  1. Which liquids conduct
  2. Setting up electrolysis
  3. Why the ions move where they do
  4. Electrolysis of water
  5. Electroplating
  6. Electricity and water safety
  7. Where electrolysis is used
  8. Where it usually goes wrong
  9. What to remember
  10. Watch one worked through
