Coordination & Homeostasis
Nerves and hormones, the reflex arc, temperature and glucose control, and plant tropisms, the topic that is really one idea, negative feedback, applied five times.
What this lesson covers
Coordination & Homeostasis is a 7-part O Level Biology lesson. Each part makes one point and then hands over to the next, so it can be read in a sitting or picked up again at the part you stopped on. It defines the idea in plain words before using it, works through an example step by step, breaks the topic into its parts and compares them, names the mistakes that cost marks in an exam, ends with a recap of what to remember.
How it begins
The nervous system uses electrical impulses along neurones. It is fast, short-lived and acts on specific effectors. The endocrine system uses hormones: chemicals secreted by glands into the blood. It is slower, longer-lasting and acts on target organs anywhere in the body. That four-point comparison is a standard question. The central nervous system is the brain and spinal cord; the peripheral system is the nerves.
The 7 parts
- Two control systems, and how they differ
