What this lesson covers

Chemical Bonding is a 9-part Class 9 Chemistry lesson. Each part makes one point and then hands over to the next, so it can be read in a sitting or picked up again at the part you stopped on. It defines the idea in plain words before using it, works through an example step by step, breaks the topic into its parts and compares them, shows where it is used outside the textbook, names the mistakes that cost marks in an exam, ends with a recap of what to remember.

How it begins

A chemical bond is the force holding two atoms together. Atoms form bonds for one reason: to end up with a full outer electron shell, which is a lower-energy, more stable state. There are three ways to get there, and they give three bond types: Ionic, electrons are transferred (metal + non-metal). Covalent: electrons are shared (non-metal + non-metal). Metallic: electrons are pooled (metal + metal).

  4. Metallic bonding, and why properties differ
  5. Predicting the formula of an ionic compound
  6. Why structure decides use
  7. Where marks get lost
  8. What to remember
  9. Watch one worked through
