What this lesson covers

Chemical Reactivity is a 9-part Class 10 Chemistry lesson. Each part makes one point and then hands over to the next, so it can be read in a sitting or picked up again at the part you stopped on. It defines the idea in plain words before using it, works through an example step by step, breaks the topic into its parts and compares them, shows where it is used outside the textbook, names the mistakes that cost marks in an exam, ends with a recap of what to remember.

How it begins

The reactivity of a metal is how readily it loses electrons to form positive ions. M → Mn+ + ne−A metal that loses electrons easily is highly reactive. One that clings to them is unreactive. That single measure predicts a surprising amount: how the metal reacts with water and acid, how it is extracted from its ore, and whether it corrodes. Arrange the metals in order and you get the reactivity series.

The 9 parts

  1. What reactivity means
  2. The reactivity series
  3. Displacement reactions
  4. Extraction and corrosion
  5. Predicting whether a reaction happens
  6. Rust, and how much it costs
  7. Where marks get lost
  8. What to remember
  9. Watch one worked through
