What this lesson covers

Electrochemistry is a 9-part Class 10 Chemistry lesson. Each part makes one point and then hands over to the next, so it can be read in a sitting or picked up again at the part you stopped on. It defines the idea in plain words before using it, works through an example step by step, breaks the topic into its parts and compares them, shows where it is used outside the textbook, names the mistakes that cost marks in an exam, ends with a recap of what to remember.

How it begins

Electrochemistry is really about redox, reactions where electrons move from one substance to another. Two things always happen together: Oxidation = loss of electrons Reduction = gain of electrons The memory aid is OIL RIG: Oxidation Is Loss, Reduction Is Gain. They cannot happen alone, electrons lost by one substance must be gained by another.

The 9 parts

  1. Redox: the reaction underneath
  2. Electrolysis
  3. What happens at each electrode
  4. Why it matters industrially
  5. Predicting the products of electrolysis
  6. Electrolysis in industry
  7. Where marks get lost
  8. What to remember
  9. Watch one worked through
