What this lesson covers

Organic Chemistry is a 8-part O Level Chemistry lesson. Each part makes one point and then hands over to the next, so it can be read in a sitting or picked up again at the part you stopped on. It defines the idea in plain words before using it, works through an example step by step, breaks the topic into its parts and compares them, shows where it is used outside the textbook, names the mistakes that cost marks in an exam, ends with a recap of what to remember.

How it begins

Crude oil is a mixture of hydrocarbons (compounds of hydrogen and carbon only) separated by fractional distillation. The oil is heated and vaporised at the bottom of a tall column that is hot at the base and cool at the top. Each fraction condenses at the level where the temperature falls below its boiling point.

The 8 parts

  1. Crude oil and fractional distillation
  2. Alkanes and alkenes: the two hydrocarbon families
  3. Cracking, and why it pays
  4. Alcohols, carboxylic acids and esters
  5. Polymers: addition and condensation
  6. Where marks go
  7. What to remember
  8. Watch one worked through
