What this lesson covers

Programming Fundamentals is a 10-part Class 8 Computer Science lesson. Each part makes one point and then hands over to the next, so it can be read in a sitting or picked up again at the part you stopped on. It defines the idea in plain words before using it, works through an example step by step, breaks the topic into its parts and compares them, shows where it is used outside the textbook, names the mistakes that cost marks in an exam, ends with a recap of what to remember.

How it begins

A program expresses an algorithm in a language a computer can execute. The syntax is the easy part. It can be looked up. Designing a correct algorithm and finding your own errors are the skills that take time. The single most important idea in programming: the computer does exactly what you wrote, not what you meant. Every bug is a gap between the two.

The 10 parts

  1. From algorithm to program
  2. Data types and variables
  3. The three control structures
  4. Functions and why they matter
  5. Lists and iteration
  6. Debugging systematically
  7. What programming is used for
  8. Where it usually goes wrong
  9. What to remember
