Reading Comprehension
Finding answers that are stated, and working out answers that are only hinted at.
What this lesson covers
Reading Comprehension is a 7-part Class 4 English lesson. Each part makes one point and then hands over to the next, so it can be read in a sitting or picked up again at the part you stopped on. It defines the idea in plain words before using it, works through an example step by step, breaks the topic into its parts and compares them, shows where it is used outside the textbook, names the mistakes that cost marks in an exam, ends with a recap of what to remember.
How it begins
Comprehension questions come in two kinds, and knowing which you are facing changes how you look. Literal: the answer is written in the text. You just have to find it. Inference: the answer is not written down. You work it out from clues. Most people lose marks on the second kind by looking for words that are not there.
The 7 parts
- Two kinds of answer
- A method that works
- Reading between the lines
- Answering properly
- Reading beyond the exam
- Where it usually goes wrong
- What to remember
