Vocabulary Building
How to work out a word you have never seen, and how to remember it afterwards.
What this lesson covers
Vocabulary Building is a 8-part Class 4 English lesson. Each part makes one point and then hands over to the next, so it can be read in a sitting or picked up again at the part you stopped on. It defines the idea in plain words before using it, works through an example step by step, breaks the topic into its parts and compares them, shows where it is used outside the textbook, names the mistakes that cost marks in an exam, ends with a recap of what to remember.
How it begins
Your vocabulary is all the words you know. The larger it is, the more precisely you can say what you mean, and the more you understand of what you read. You cannot look up every unknown word, so the real skill is working words out and then holding on to them.
The 8 parts
- Why vocabulary matters
- Using clues in the sentence
- Prefixes and suffixes
- Working out an unknown word
- Making words stick
- Where it usually goes wrong
- What to remember
- Watch one worked through
