Fractions & Decimals
Operating with fractions confidently, and converting between the two forms.
What this lesson covers
Fractions & Decimals is a 10-part Class 6 Mathematics lesson. Each part makes one point and then hands over to the next, so it can be read in a sitting or picked up again at the part you stopped on. It defines the idea in plain words before using it, works through an example step by step, breaks the topic into its parts and compares them, shows where it is used outside the textbook, names the mistakes that cost marks in an exam, ends with a recap of what to remember.
How it begins
A fraction and a decimal both describe part of a whole. Which you use is a matter of convenience. 3/4 = 0.75 1/8 = 0.125 2/5 = 0.4Fractions are exact. 1/3 written as a decimal never ends: 0.3333… goes on for ever. That is why fractions survive in mathematics rather than being replaced by decimals: sometimes only the fraction is precisely right.
