What this lesson covers

Fractions & Percentages is a 9-part Class 5 Mathematics lesson. Each part makes one point and then hands over to the next, so it can be read in a sitting or picked up again at the part you stopped on. It defines the idea in plain words before using it, works through an example step by step, breaks the topic into its parts and compares them, shows where it is used outside the textbook, names the mistakes that cost marks in an exam, ends with a recap of what to remember.

How it begins

A fraction, a decimal and a percentage can all describe the same amount. They are three languages for one idea. 1/2 = 0.5 = 50%Per cent means "out of a hundred". So 50% is 50 out of 100, which is half. Knowing all three lets you pick whichever is easiest for the question in front of you.

The 9 parts

  1. One amount, three names
  2. The conversions worth memorising
  3. Moving between the three
  4. Finding a percentage of an amount
  5. A discount problem
  6. Percentages you will actually meet
  7. Where it usually goes wrong
  8. What to remember
  9. Watch one worked through
