0 hundreds = 04 tens = 407 ones = 70 + 40 + 7 = 47
47 is 4 tens and 7 ones.
6 hundreds = 6003 tens = 305 ones = 5600 + 30 + 5 = 635

6 hundreds = 6000 tens = 05 ones = 5600 + 0 + 5 = 605
605 has no ten rods at all, the 0 holds the tens place open.

Tens and ones

Every number is built from blocks.

A single block is one. Ten of them stacked make a rod of ten.

47 is 4 rods of ten and 7 single ones.

Hundreds, tens and ones

Ten rods side by side make a hundred flat, a square of 100.

635 is 6 hundreds, 3 tens and 5 ones.

600 + 30 + 5 = 635
3๐Ÿ” In detailPart 3 / 7

Place value

Where a digit sits tells you what it is worth.

In 748: the 7 is worth 700, the 4 is worth 40, and the 8 is worth 8.

The same digit is worth different amounts in different places. In 404 the first 4 is worth 400 and the last 4 is worth just 4.

4โš ๏ธ Common mistakesPart 4 / 7

The zero still counts

A zero is not nothing. It is a place holder.

605 is 6 hundreds, no tens and 5 ones. Leave the zero out and you write 65, which is a completely different number.

5โœ๏ธ Worked examplePart 5 / 7

Estimating

You do not always need the exact number. Estimating means saying about how many.

298 is about 300. 51 + 48 is about 100.

An estimate is a quick check: if you work out 51 + 48 and get 990, you know at a glance something went wrong.

6โœ… SummaryPart 6 / 7

Number star!

  • Numbers are built from hundreds, tens and ones.
  • A digit is worth different amounts in different places.
  • Zero holds a place open, never drop it.
  • Estimate first to check your answer is sensible.

Watch one worked through

Here is one done slowly, with the reason for every move. Then one for you.

Let me show you

Write the number that is three hundred and six.

  1. 3 _ _
Three hundred means a 3 in the hundreds place.
Work left to right, the same order you say the number in.
  2. 3 0 _
There are no tens mentioned, so the tens place gets a 0.
A zero is a place holder. It says "nothing here" and keeps the other digits in the right place.
  3. 3 0 6
    Six ones goes last: 306.
Leaving the zero out would give 36, which is a completely different number. The zero is doing real work.

Answer: 306

Now you try

Write the number: four hundred and nine.
