Changing state

Heating and cooling can change a material from one state to another.

Solid โ†’ liquid โ†’ gas, and all the way back again.

Check yourself: Heating a solid until it turns to liquid is calledโ€ฆ
2๐Ÿงฉ The partsPart 2 / 6

Melting and freezing

Melting: solid โ†’ liquid, by heating.

Freezing: liquid โ†’ solid, by cooling.

Water melts and freezes at 0 ยฐC.

Check yourself: At what temperature does water freeze?
3โœ๏ธ Worked examplePart 3 / 6

Boiling and condensing

Boiling: liquid โ†’ gas, by heating. Water boils at 100 ยฐC.

Condensing: gas โ†’ liquid, by cooling. That is why a cold glass gets wet on the outside.

Check yourself: At what temperature does water boil?
4๐Ÿ” In detailPart 4 / 6

A physical change

Changing state is a physical change, no new material is made.

Ice, water and steam are all still water. Freeze the water again and you get ice back.

Check yourself: Melted ice can be turned back into ice. This means the change isโ€ฆ
5โœ… SummaryPart 5 / 6

State changer!

  • Melt (heat) โ†” freeze (cool) at 0 ยฐC for water.
  • Boil (heat) โ†” condense (cool) at 100 ยฐC.
  • Changing state is reversible: same material.

Watch one worked through

Here is one done slowly, with the reason for every move. Then one for you.

Let me show you

Name the change of state and the temperature: ice becoming water, and water becoming steam.

  1. ๐ŸงŠ โ†’ ๐Ÿ’ง melting at 0 ยฐC
    Solid to liquid is melting.
Ice melts at 0 ยฐC. That is the same temperature at which water freezes.
  2. ๐Ÿ’ง โ†’ โ˜๏ธ boiling at 100 ยฐC
    Liquid to gas is boiling.
Water boils at 100 ยฐC. Evaporation can happen below that, boiling cannot.
  3. melting + boiling = heat in freezing + condensing = heat out
Heat goes IN for both of these.
Going up a state takes heat in, coming down a state gives heat out.

Answer: Melting at 0 ยฐC and boiling at 100 ยฐC

Now you try

At what temperature does water freeze, in ยฐC?
